Taras Voznyak Biography

Taras Voznyak is one of the most popular and richest Translator who was born on May 11, 1957 in Svarychiv, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine. Taras Voznyak came into the world shortly after the return of his father from exile Magadan (exile ran between 1945 and 1956). The family moved to the city of Broshniv-Osada.

First issue of Independent Cultural Journal “Yi” was released in 1989. Since then, Taras Voznyak has been the editor-in-chief of the Journal and its publisher. With the assistance of the Reform Movement of Lithuania “Sajudis” The initial five Journal issues were made by photocopies in Vilnius. The photocopies were then transported to Lviv in the first place, where they were stitched before being distributed throughout Ukraine. This was the time that Oleksandr Kryvenko, the editor of the samvydav Lviv journal “Postup”, joined the Journal team. In 1995, the Journal was registered as a legal entity – Taras Voznyak Mykhaylo Moskal, and Oleksandr Pohranychnyi joined as the Journal founding members.

Taras Voznyak was awarded with an honorary distinction “Knight of Halychyna” in the nomination “Public Figure” (2001), a distinction “20 Years of the First Democratic Convocation of Lviv Regional Council” (2010), a distinction by Lviv Mayor “Saint George Distinction of Honour” (2011), Cross of Merit (Poland, 2014), a distinction of Polish-Ukrainian Ignacy Jan Paderewski Foundation (2014), Honorary award “100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic” (2018).

Taras Voznyak was part of an intellectual group that was informal and that gathered with the title “Lvivska Shkola” (Lviv School). Ihor Klekh Hryhoriy Komskyi, Mykola Yakovyna, and others were members of the group that was active in Lviv during the 1980s. He organized the publication of samizdat the literature of culturology. He translated a lot of texts, and was also a publisher within samizdat and in particular the works of Jewish-Polish author Bruno Schulz.

During the 1990s Taras Voznyak has started to actively publish his culturology essays in Ukraine as well as abroad.
