On the 21st of July of 2008 the female winner of the 100 breaststroke in the Trials, Jessica Hardy, was informed that she had been tested positive for clenbuterol which is a banned drug. Hardy later quit the US Olympic team in August 1st on the day of her first hearing in front members of the United States Anti-Doping Agency. Unfortunately for Kirk Hardy, her exile from the team came too late to allow Kirk to be chosen as the replacement for Hardy for the Olympic team, or in order for Kirk to be accepted by for the Olympic team as an official part of the USA team. The deadline for registering for the Games was over.
