Fukutani ended up getting bored with creating Dokudami Tenement, and after having missed several deadlines, he announced that the show would be ending in 1993. The attempts to develop new series, like the Yakuza-themed RETAKE with little success. Finally, due to the pressure of readers and publishers the series was relaunched by his most well-known works in the form of New Dokudami Tenement in 1994 which lasted only two months. Through the 1990s, he was struggling with alcoholism and was often hospitalized before passing away from lung edema in the year 2000.
He lent a selection of his tales to publishing company Houbunsha which was the owner of the Weekly Manga Times. Weekly Manga Times who began to publish the stories under the name Dokudami Tenement. Fukutani illustrated the lives of the fringes of Japan’s predominantly middle-class society, and also of different social groups that were not often featured in media, yet essential to the boom in economics that was taking place at the time. The popular show ran for 14 years and was later adapted into an live-action film in 1988. There were 3 volumes of the original animation video in 1989 and two direct-to video films in 1995.

After a string of low-paying positions, Fukutani applied for a job as an assistant for Yukichi Yamamatsu (jp). Fukutani’s drinking habits impacted his work and he was fired the first day of his employment. Inspiring by his experience Fukutani began making manga based on his experiences. In 1978 Fukutani was recognized with an honorable mention award in a contest sponsored by Dakkusu manga magazine for his manga Tokyo Adieu.
In 1979, he drew on his own personal experiences from his close to poverty drinking and living at areas like the Asagaya as well as Koenji districts, while employed as an hourly laborer at construction sites, as the basis for his manga. The first work he published is the short story Bohemian Rhapsody in the Weekly Manga Goraku in 1979.
In French, the first volume of Dokudami Tenement (published as Le Vagabond de Tokyo) was an official selection of the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2010. The third volume in the same series was nominated for the ACBD’s Prix Asie de la Critique in 2013. In English, the first translated volume of Dokudami Tenement was nominated for the 2017 Broken Frontier Award for “Best Collection of Classic Material”.
