Birth Year 1990

Takanoiwa Yoshimori is one of the most popular and richest Sumo Wrestler who was born on February 26, 1990 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Takanoiwa Yoshimori (born 26 February 1990, aka the name suggests, Adiyagiin Baasandorj) is a former sumo-wrestler of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He began his professional career at the beginning of January in 2009. He is the sandanme and juro championship. He was able to compete in the juro division during July of 2012 and also the top makuuchi division debut time, in the month of January of 2014. He was the sole wrestler enlisted by the former yokozuna Takanohana in order to join the top ranks of sekitori. He was the runner-up at one tournament in the top division and also won two awards that included two of them in recognition of Fighting Spirit and one for Outstanding Performance. His most prestigious rank was maegashira 2.

In the following two years, Takanoiwa shifted back and forth in the two top divisions. He was dropped after the May tournament, but was reinstated shortly after winning 12 times in July. After two losses, He was dropped to juryo, but was promoted once more following the tournament in March. He played just two rounds before being removed, but was promoted for the fourth time following an kachi-koshi record which is a winning streak in the month of November of 2015. In January and March 2016, he set back-to-back winning records at the highest level for the first time. In July, he recorded his most impressive performance at the highest level winning 12-3 and finishing as runner-up to Harumafuji. He received his first prize of special recognition for Fighting Spirit, and won the highest ranking to date, maegashira 3 in the tournament of September.

He was injured during the Tottori stage of the regional tour in October 2017, and was hospitalized from November 5 to November 9 in Fukuoka, reportedly with concussion and a fractured skull among other ailments. He withdrew from the November 2017 tournament as a result. On November 14 it was reported that he had been assaulted with a beer bottle (later said to be a karaoke remote control) by yokozuna Harumafuji. Harumafuji withdrew from the November tournament on the same day and did not deny the reports, saying “I sincerely apologize for causing trouble.” It later emerged that Takanoiwa’s injuries were not as severe as first reported, with a doctor at the Fukuoka hospital who wrote the initial medical certificate submitted to the Japan Sumo Association by stablemaster Takanohana saying that there were no symptoms of skull fracture or brain fluid leakage, and that the “two weeks of recovery time” mentioned in the certificate should have started from the date of the incident in late October, not when the certificate was issued on November 9, meaning that Takanoiwa was cleared to enter the tournament. Takanoiwa was questioned by Tottori prefectural police as part of their enquiry into the incident, which is alleged to have been sparked off by Takanoiwa disrespecting yokozuna Hakuhō by telling him that “your era is over” and playing with his cell phone while he was being reprimanded for his bad attitude.

Takanoiwa was the victim of an assault by sumo wrestler Harumafuji in October

  1. Takanoiwa was then the assailant in an incident against a junior member of his own stable the following year, which led to his retirement from the sport.

The debut was delayed by one event while the visa was obtained and he was able to make his debut in maezumo at the beginning of January 2009 tournament, along his fellow recruits, Takageppo as well as Takatoshi. In his place were former students of Johoku High School (well known for its sumo-based program) Takarafuji, Kimikaze and Tokushoryu. The official debut took place during the subsequent March 2009 tournament in which the team posted a solid 5-1 score in the Jonokuchi division. In the tournament of May 2009, in the jonidan division it was his turn to compete for the title, posting an unbeatable 7-0 record, winning only on the last day in an elimination play-off. After two wins in the Sandanme division in November 2009, He won the title in that division, registering a 7-0 mark and a playoff victory. This earned him a promotion to the makushita division 3 however he struggled in the makushita third division for over one year, not having a tournament that was a winner, and midway of the May 2011 tournament He dropped out, and was absent from the next tournament. He was sent back to sandanme. He was not discouraged and won a 6-1 mark in his first tournament since returning. This enabled him to be promoted to makushita in the next tournament , where he posted an overall record of 6-1 and took part in a three-man final to win the championship. He fell in the third playoff game to the future sekitori Chiyootori. His luck continued to improve and, after four wins in four tournaments at makushita He was promoted to the ranks of salaried juryo for the first time in the tournament in July 2012. After scoring a winning eight-seven record in the tournament, he only won two tournaments with a score of 7-8 following this. But, at the level of juryo 13 which is a low rank enough to be at risk of being relegated in the event that he didn’t perform well, he changed his fortunes around and won the juryo championship with 12-3 results. After five more tournaments, with the majority of winning records in juryo, and makuuchi, he was elevated to the makuuchi top-tier division for the tournament in January 2014.

Baasandorj completed a test for selectiveness that was administered by an Japanese teacher who was a teacher at Johoku High School in Shimane Prefecture He had traveled to Mongolia seeking out potential applicants for sumo. He was then asked to visit Japan to study as an exchange scholar in the sumo program at age of 16. Three months after his arrival to Japan his father passed away of liver cancer in Mongolia. He had experienced the death of his mom due to heart problems at 8 years old. Despite this setback but he continued to be a star and in 2007 he was among the top 4 in an individual competition at the national junior sumo championship and in 2008 he finished second in the middleweight category during the World Junior Sumo Championships held in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

In November 2008, he joined the Takanohana stable, which was run by former Yokozuna Takanohana whom he had admired since his early years. The name he chose for his ring select is said to have been derived from an accidental meeting with the author and singer Akihiro Miwa at Haneda airport while he was accompanied by Takanohana from the Shimane Prefecture, who was accompanied by Takanohana to the new stable. When he met Miwa, Miwa described him a “like a rock” (Yan Iwa). It left an impression on him, and that evening he had a conversation with his stablemaster, and they came up with the name Takanoiwa (noble rock) and the word name taka (Gui ) being derived from the stablemaster’s name (as is customary in the stable).

Losing records in the last two tournaments of 2016 saw him drop to maegashira 10 but he returned to form in January 2017. After compiling a 10–3 record he earned his first kinboshi on day 14 with force out (yorikiri) win over Hakuhō. Despite losing to Sokokurai on the final day he finished in a tie for third place and was awarded the special prize for Outstanding Performance. He was promoted to his highest rank to date of maegashira 2 for the Haru tournament in March. He withdrew from the May 2017 tournament on the 12th day due to a thigh injury.
