T. J. English (born on October 6 1957) is an American journalist and author who is most well-known for his non-fiction works on the Irish mob as well as criminal justice, organized crime and the American underground.

In the 80s, taking a taxi in the late at night, English wrote for Irish America magazine. This resulted in his first novel, The Westies. Then, he wrote a series of stories for Playboy called “The New Mob”, which examined the new face of organized criminality. He then went on to write feature-length articles in Esquire, New York Magazine, The Village Voice, the defunct Brooklyn Bridge Magazine, and other magazines.

His first book, The Westies: Inside The Hell’s Kitchen Irish Mob (1990), is a best-selling account of an Irish American gang in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City. The Westies operated primarily in the 1970s and 1980s, though the roots of the gang go all the way back to the Prohibition Era.
