Sylvie Kinigi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 24, 1952 in Burundi. Kinigi was born in the year 1953 into an agricultural family in the rural areas of Burundi. The father of Kinigi was a trader and her mother was a farmer of the land and maintained the home. Sylvie was the third child of six. The youngest was a girl and was required to assist her mother. However, Sylvie was permitted to attend an Belgian girl’s school that was run by nuns. She was educated in primary and secondary education , and later went to the capital city of the time, Bujumbura, to study economics. When she was 19 years old, she was married to one professor and had four children, however she continued to study. She also was involved in the women’s group of the ruling Tutsi party, and was able to influence legislation as well as economic and social policies adopted specifically for women. Kinigi was the leader of this group from the capital, and was on the executive board of national size that was the female branch. After graduating at Burundi university, she was offered an appointment at the central bank of Burundi and she also taught at the institution. In the bank , she was promoted and assigned the responsibility of studies and research. She was promoted in 1991 and was appointed adviser to the premier and was in charge of cutting down on military spending and implementing an economic reform plan.

In 2004 Kinigi was working in conjunction with The United Nations Development Programme.

In January 1994, the Parliament was elected Cyprien Ntaryamira, the former minister of agriculture, to the presidency to serve the rest of his presidency. Because Ntaryamira is a Hutu this appointment caused anger from many Tutsis. Kinigi did, however, recognize Ntaryamira as President, however, she quit as the prime minister after the President was inaugurated. Kinigi was the target of attacks, criticisms as well as threats of all kinds, and it wasn’t long before she was exiled from the country. In February the Tutsi was replaced with Anatole Kanyenkiko. She was a second Tutsi.

There was an armed conflict among Hutus and Tutsis up to 1993. Elections were then held as the transition towards democratic rule. Surprised, the head of the opposition, Melchior Ndadaye became the President of Burundi. He was appointed to a cabinet comprising 2/3 Hutu as well as one third Tutsi members. Sylvie Kinigi was appointed the first Prime Minister. Kinigi was appointed in an effort to create unity between Burundi’s two distinct ethnic groups. Ndadaye was Hutu and Kinigi hoped to lessen Tutsi opposition to his government by selecting the title of Tutsi as the Prime Minister. Kinigi declared that reconciliation was her top priority.

1993. She was also the Burundi’s Prime Minister from until 7 February 1994. She was also the acting President from the 27th of October 1993 until 5 February 1994. She is the first and, to date, only woman to be in these positions.
