Elina Groberman and Baginskaite won the 2000 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship. Baginskaite defeated Groberman by 2-0 in the playoff. She was then eligible to participate in the Women’s World Chess Championship 2001, which took place in Moscow. This was the first time a female U.S. player had reached the last 16 since the Championship began in 1927. In a tiebreak, she was defeated by Xu Yuhua. Baginskaite also competed in the Women’s World Championship in 2010 and 2015. Baginskaite changed her national federation to Lithuania in 2019,

Baginskate was conceived in Vilnius. Her mother is Gintautele Baginskiene, a painter, and her father Tadas Baginskas is an architect and professor. She learned chess from Tadas Baginskas when she was eight, and visited a chess school at the age of ten. Baginskate was fifteen when she became second in the women’s chess competition of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. She finished behind Esther Epstein. She finished third in 1986 after Ildiko Madl, and Svetlana Prudinikova at the World Junior Girls Championship, Vilnius, which was her hometown. The event was won in Baguio the next year. She was awarded the title Woman International Master (WIM) for this accomplishment. She won the 1987 championship, her second international tournament, and her first outside of the Soviet Union. In 1992, she won the Lithuanian Women’s Chess Championship at Panevezys.

Baginskaite was a member of the first board representing Lithuania at the Women’s Chess Olympiad in 1994, 1996. In 2000, she switched to the U.S. team and was on the first board. She also played on the second board in 2002. She was also on the reserve board in 2006.
