Sylke Otto (born 7 July 1969 in Karl-Marx-Stadt) is an ex- German luger who played from 1991 until 2007. Participating for the three Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal in the women’s singles competition in 2002 and 2006.
She was forced to retire in the sports on the 12th of January 2007 due to her pregnancy. The reason was due to a crash that occurred at Konigssee in Germany in the preceding week, which was followed by the crash of Russian’s Albert Demtschenko at Oberhof, Germany the following week. Otto was originally planning to retire from the World Luge Championships in Igls, Austria (Located southeast of Innsbruck) in February however, her accident and that of Demtschenko altered that. Her daughter is Sina born on May 29th, 2007. The retirement ceremony of Otto was held before the start in the singles women’s competition during the 2008 FIL World Championships held in Oberhof, Germany on 25 January.
Otto is one of torchbearers for in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece as it traveled through Berlin, Germany.
