She was the champion at her first Soviet Singles Tennis Championships of 1985 as well as 9 times Soviet champion in mixed and women’s doubles. On the international stage she was the winner from in 1983 the European amateur championships for mixed and women’s doubles, the bronze medalist at the 1983 Universiade in mixed and women’s doubles, as well as the winner from 8 WTA tennis doubles competitions.
At the beginning of the 1988, Svetlana Parkhomenko was ranked at the top of the WTA doubles rankings. In the year 1988 Larisa Savchenko broke up with her and decided to doubles play with the young Natasha Zvereva. In the absence of Savchenko, Parhomenko struggled to keep her best form with her other teammates. She was the winner of one WTA event with Natalia Bykova and twice reached the finals alongside Leila Meskhi. At the conclusion of the season, she was awarded WTA Sportsmanship Award.
After having completely missed 1989 season, Parkhomenko returned to play at the end 1990. In 1991, she was awarded the title of Honoured Master of Sports, becoming one of the last Soviet tennis players who received this title. In 1992, she returned to the top 10 of the Russian tennis and remained there for two more years. In 1993, she played three ties for the Russia Fed Cup team, winning her doubles games against Ukrainians and Lithuanians. After finishing her playing career in 1995, she coaches at the Moscow CSKA tennis club.
The year 1983 was the time that Svetlana Cherneva took home in the European amateur championships for mixed and women’s doubles. She also won bronze in the same categories at 1983’s Summer Universiade. In the same year, she started competing in professional tournaments at international level. In 1984, she took home the first ITF titles in San Antonio and Delray Beach and in the Wimbledon Championships advanced with Savchenko to the quarterfinals after beating third seeds Kathy Horvath and Virginia Ruzici along with Chris Evert and Catherine Tanvier. The next three years, Parkhomenko and Savchenko were winners of seven Virginia Slims tournaments including four in 1987. They were involved three times during the Virginia Slims Championships and in March 1986 they made it to the semifinals. In 1987, they reached Wimbledon semifinals, after they defeated the one of the world’s top teams, current Grand Slam winners Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver.

Svetlana Cherneva began playing tennis when she was just 8 years old. The first tennis coach she had was legendary prewar Soviet player and trainer Nina Teplyakova.
