Florence Kiplagat is one of the most popular and richest Marathon Runner who was born on February 27, 1987 in Keiyo District, Kenya. Florence Jebet Kiplagat (born 27 February 1987) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. She is a twice world champion, winning during the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships as well as the World Half Marathon Championships in 2010. IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She held the world record for the women’s half-marathon in 1:05:09 hours, until the record was broken in the hands of Peres Jepchirchir on the 10th of February 2017 in the RAK Half Marathon.

She was absent for the remainder of 2012, but she returned for the RAK Half Marathon in February the following year, and recorded her second-fastest ever time (67:13 minutes) however the distance of the race saw she in the fifth position. She was among the top contenders for in the 2012 London Marathon but she underperformed by finishing sixth in 2:27:05 minutes. In August, she took the half marathon in Klagenfurt in 70:06 mins. Her 2013 Berlin Marathon saw her top the field, with a winning time of 2:21:13 , overtaking Sharon Cherop by over a minute. In the following month, she took home the Great South Run with a time of 53:53 minutes , two minutes ahead of the other competitors. The victory in the Delhi Half Marathon closed a prosperous year.

Kiplagat broke the half marathon world record by a significant margin at the Barcelona Half Marathon in February 2014, running 1:05:12 hours to beat Mary Keitany’s old mark by 38 seconds. She also took the world record for the 20 km distance as well with a time of 1:01:56 hours.

In 2015, Kiplagat set the Half Marathon World Record with a time of 1:05:09 on 15 February in Barcelona, Spain. She continued her 2015 season success with a victory at the 2015 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:23:33 after pulling away from the competition in the 25th mile of the race.

Kiplagat’s debut marathon was the race of the year, the Berlin Marathon and she started fast, eclipsing Paula Radcliffe and Irina Mikitenko to win her first race in 2:19:44 hrs – the third-fastest run ever by a female that year. Kiplagat was the most popular choice to win at the 2012 Egmond Half Marathon, but placed second behind Meseret Hailu. She climbed to third place on the list of all-time records by running a record-breaking 1:06:38 at the Half-Marathon Roma-Ostia. She opted for the 10,000 meters in the Prefontaine Classic and claimed the third place, just after Tirunesh Dibaba. She did not be part of the Olympic team in the race however, she came in fourth in the Kenyan trial race.

She was off the grid in 2008 following the birth of her mother. Following the birth she began collaborating with Italian coach Renato Canova. The collaboration has had great results and continues to be successful to this day. Her comeback was made in the beginning of 2009 after winning at the Elgoibar cross country as well as the Cross Internacional de Italica meetings in Spain. She was the winner of the women’s competition at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships ahead of her compatriot Linet Masai. She was only the second Kenyan to be the winner of this race in the World Cross Country Championships, the first was Hellen Chepngeno who took the title in 1994. On the 14th of June, 2009, she placed 2nd in the 10,000m course in Utrecht. Florence Kiplagat did not defend her title of world champion in cross country in 2010, because she was recuperating of an injury. She first raced the half- marathon distance in September of 2010 and was able to take the first time by beating Peninah Arusei to win the Lille Half Marathon title with 1:07:40. It was enough for her to secure her a spot in the 2010 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and she also beat Dire Tune during the last sections of the race, claiming the title for women’s world in only her second race in the race. She also helped lead Kenya to another World Team title along with Arusei who is her Lille opponent. After winning world championships in cross-country and track running, the Kenyan announced that she would focus on getting on the podium on the track during the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and the 2012 London Olympics. She competed during the run of 15K at Zevenheuvelenloop and finished second to Genet Getaneh. However, at the Sapporo Half Marathon she continued her unbeaten streak across that distance.

Kiplagat finished in second place at the 2014 London Marathon in a time of 2:20:24, being narrowly defeated by her (unrelated) compatriot Edna Kiplagat.
