Suzan Denise Cook (born on January 28th in 1957) is a U.S. presidential advisor, pastor, theologian and author activist, academic, and pastor who was an ambassador for the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom from April 2011 through October 2013. She has been an advisor on policy for the President Bill Clinton and later to Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros, who was a director and lecturer of communication in Harvard University, a professor of theology at New York Theological Seminary, an ordained pastor in a variety of congregations, a TV producer and the author of more than 12 books. The first woman to be a head of the church in history of 200 years of American Baptist Churches USA and an intimate acquaintance of Coretta Scott King. The honorary membership of her is Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
In 1993, Johnson Cook was selected to be an White House Fellow. Then she became an adviser to president Bill Clinton, serving as an advisor to the domestic policy on a variety of issues. She was also a member the Domestic Policy Council. She was part of the advisory group for Clinton’s One America Initiative. In the wake of her work as advisor on policy for the president, she became an advisor on behalf of the Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros between 1994 and 1997.
She became the first female senior pastor in the 200-year history of the American Baptist Churches USA. In 2002 she became the first woman elected president of the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, a conference which represents all of the historically African-American denominations. Johnson became the official chaplain of the New York City Police Department, a position which she held for twenty-one years, becoming the first and only woman to hold the position.
On June 15, 2010 she was nominated by president Barack Obama for the post of United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom in the State Department. However, her nomination was put on hold in the Senate and therefore expired without a vote at the end of the 111th session of Congress on January 3, 2011.
She earned a master’s degree at Union Theological Seminary in 1983 and in the year 1990, she received a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary in 1990. She has completed the Minority Business Executive Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Johnson Cook was raised in the Bronx, New York the youngest of two children. Her father was among the very first trolley driver blacks who operated in New York City before opening the security company and her mother was a teacher in the public schools in Harlem. Her older brother and she who went on go to Dartmouth College, skipped grades throughout their school times. Johnson was a student at Riverdale Country Day School. Johnson completed high school at the age of 16, and attended Fisk University before transferring to Emerson College, graduating in 1976 with a speech degree. The following year, she earned an master’s education degree at Columbia University. She also had a brief stint in politics, and helped her brother to win an election to the New York State Assembly.
Following college, Johnson began her career in the field of television, working as a producer for various news stations from Boston, Washington, and Miami before she decided to go into the ministry. Johnson received her Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary after being installed in 1982. Then she became the pastor’s chief at the Mariners Temple Baptist Church from 1983 until 1996.
Johnson Cook founded the Bronx Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in 1996, which she pastored until 2010. She also founded several non-profit and advocacy organization, such as the Multi-Ethnic Center Inc. She founded Moving Up Productions, a communications, leadership, and consulting firm. She taught at New York Theological Seminary from 1996-98. She spent time on the faculty at Harvard University, serving as a dean and a professor teaching in the areas of speech and communications.
