Susan (Susie) O’Neill was born on the 2nd of August 1973, in Mackay, Queensland to mother, Trish and father, John. She has two siblings: two sisters and a brother. Her family relocated into Brisbane and she attended school in Lourdes Hill College (LHC) in Hawthorne. While there at LHC, O’Neill excelled in sports and set school records for 50m and 100 meters of butterfly, freestyle, and backstroke. O’Neill was the LHC cross-country champion and set records for 13 years 800 meters in 1986 as well as the 15 years, 400 m at the 1988 Olympics for sports. These records remained until the year 2011.

O’Neill was the winner of the 200-meter butterfly in the 1996 Summer Olympics and also the 200 freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She was awarded 35 Australian titles and has eight Olympics medals. Among Australians the only two other athletes, Ian Thorpe and Leisel Jones have more.

She commentated at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She was the Oceania athletes’ representative on the International Olympic Committee from 2000 to 2005, when she resigned her membership (and was replaced by Barbara Kendall).

On 10 March 2007, O’Neill was honoured by having the temporary swimming pool in the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne named after her for the duration of the 12th FINA World Championships, the site of the swimming events.

She was trained by Bernie Wakefield until 1994, later Scott Volkers at the Commercial Swimming Club in Brisbane.
