Ceruti was Professor in the field of Epistemology, Philosophy of Science at different universities in Italy since 1994: University of Parma; Polytechnic of Milan; University of Palermo; University of Milan; University of Bergamo (wherein he established the Research Center on Complex Systems CERCO as well as a Doctoral school in Anthropology and Epistemology of Complex Systems), University of Milan.
Between 1986 and 1993, Ceruti began to work with Edgar Morin at CETSAP (Research Center in Transdisciplinary Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Anthropology, Politics, Paris). He developed and expanded his Evolutionary Epistemology program to create a trans-disciplinary research program, devoted to the structure of an Anthropology and Epistemology of Complex Systems, along with a Complex Anthropology and Epistemology.

Ceruti was employed at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. He also worked at Jean Piaget’s Genetic Epistemology International Centre. Ceruti developed an innovative research line in Philosophy of Science based on analysis and explanations of the epistemological implications of Evolutionary Sciences. Ceruti created an Evolutionary Epistemology research program that draws upon contemporary theories of biological evolutionary, history of ideas, and genetic psychology.
Ceruti has been organizing symposia since 1985, and also establishing a large research network on the major research topics of the new Sciences of Complex Systems. These pioneers included Jerome Bruner and Heinz von Foerster as well as Ernst von Glasersfeld, Susan Oyama and Isabelle Stengers. Collective publications such as La sfida dilla complessita are a result of these collaborations and synergies. Ceruti and Gianluca Bocchi edited this work. It was the beginning of one of the most important philosophical debates of recent decades in Italy. At the international level, it helped to connect innovative lines of inquiry in the Sciences of Complex Systems in an uni-disciplinary research direction, which is now known as “Epistemology of Complex Systems” since the late 1980s. This work, along with the following books by Ceruti, stimulated epistemological reflections about the paradigms of modern sciences and the emergence of novel research perspectives in many disciplines: from Architecture and Sociology and Anthropology to Management and Organization Sciences to Educational Sciences to Cognitive Sciences and Philosophy of Mind to History to the Sciences of Globalization.
