Deshabandu Susanthika Jayasinghe(Sinhala susntikaa: susntikaa JysiNh ; Tamil: cucntikaa jycingh) (born on December 17, 1975) is a Sri Lankan sprint athlete specializing in the 100 and 200 meters. She took home the Olympic silver medal in the 200m event at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney The first Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal and also the first Asian to be awarded the Olympic and world championships medal for a sprint race. She also took home two gold medals during the 2007 Asian Athletics Championships and a bronze medal at the 2007 IAAF World Championships. She is also known by the name of Asian Black Mare.
In February, 2009 Jayasinghe announced her decision to quit sports to concentrate on becoming a mom. In March of 2009 she gave the birth of a boy.
In November 2010 she announced her plan to return to competition.
In the 200-meter race in the 1997 World Championships and then travelled to the United States of America to prepare to prepare for in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Without support from her athletics organization, she had to take on a huge amount of debt to get to the Olympics however, in the women’s 200-meter race, she placed second behind Marion Jones and Pauline Davis-Thompson to claim the bronze medal, becoming the country’s first Olympic gold medalist since 1948. On October 5, 2007, Jones admitted to having taken performance- enhancing drugs prior to the Olympics, and Jayasinghe was later awarded the silver medal.

Jayasinghe was banned from competing in April 1998 due to not passing a drug test, which she claimed was rigged as a result of her political views and an argument with an Sports Ministry official. The official later cleared her of the offence. In a press conference held of the 200m women’s champions in the 2000 Olympics in which she was asked if her nation was proud of her achievements, she responded with a quiet voice:
She travelled to Los Angeles to train with Nagalingam Ethirveerasingam (Asian Games Gold medalist in the high jump in 1958, and a two times Olympian for the long jump between 1952 and 1956). Then, she took home silver medals at the 100m and 200 m events at the 2007 Asian Athletics Championships in Jordan and a bronze medal at the 200 meters event at 2007’s IAAF World Championships. This is the first World Championship medal in 10 years. On the 13th of August 2007, she was classified in the IAAF as 18th in the world in the 100m sprint and 20th overall for the 200 m race.
Jayasinghe contested the 2010 general election from the Kegalle district from the United People’s Freedom Alliance, however failed to secure a seat. In 2016, she was appointed as an adviser in the Sports Ministry for selecting and training prospective track athletes. In June 2017, she attempted to sell her silver medal due to suspension of her Sports Ministry pay.
