Pinker received an B.A. diploma at McGill University in 1979 and she earned an M.A.Sc. degree from McGill University in 1979 and an M.A.Sc. degree from the University of Waterloo in 1981. Then she spent the next more than 25 years in clinical work as well as teaching psychology, initially in Dawson College, then at McGill University.

Susan Pinker is a psychologist writer, author and social science columnist with The Wall Street Journal. She was previously a columnist on a weekly basis of The Globe and Mail, and she has also written columns for The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Times of London. Her debut book, The Sexual Paradox, was named The Sexual Paradox with the William James Book Award in 2010, and was released worldwide in seventeen countries. Her most recent novel, The Village Effect was an instant Canadian bestseller as well as an Apple Best Pick for 2014 in the field of nonfiction. Her work has been highlighted on The Economist, The Financial Times as well as Der Spiegel.

In 2014 Susan was given the Holden Award by the International Society for Intelligence Research. In 2015 she was a Poynter Fellow in Journalism at Yale University.

Pinker’s book, The Sexual Paradox: Men, Women and the Real Gender Gap, is focused on how sex differences play out in the workplace. By comparing fragile boys who later succeed, with high achieving women who opt out, Pinker turns several assumptions upside down: that the sexes are biologically equivalent, that smarts are all it takes to succeed and that men and women have identical interests and goals. After decades of women’s educational coups and rising through the ranks, men still outnumber women in business, physical science, law, engineering, and politics. In explaining this ratio, Pinker’s stance is that discrimination plays just a bit part. If the majority of children with school and behavioral problems are boys, then why do so many overcome early obstacles, while rafts of high achieving women choose jobs that pay less or opt out at pivotal moments in their careers?

Her book in 2008, The Sexual Paradox, was honored with The Sexual Paradox with the William James Book Award by the American Psychological Association in 2009. The book she wrote in 2014, The Village Effect, was chosen for inclusion in the Apple Nonfiction Best Pick in 2014.
