Susan Loy is one of the most popular and richest American artist who was born on February 26, 1951 in United States. Susan Loy (born 1951) is an American artist, calligrapher and writer best well-known in her “Literary Calligraphy” watercolor paintings of the Language of Flowers and the White House Easter Egg Roll. These works combine hand-written classic quotes taken from William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Biblical sources, etc. and finely-rendered artwork done with steel brushes and pens.
In the 1980s when Loy created the circular mandala, which she paired with calligraphic handwriting that has evolved into her own style. The art columnist of The Roanoke Times dubbed Loy’s work as a blend with “magic circles, calligraphy, and philosophical texts.” Loy said to a reporter that she has adopted the “commercially refined style for the calligraphy.”
In 2000, the coordinator of the Yankee Peddler Foundation in Medina, Ohio stated that, “Ms. Loy’s Literary Calligraphy demonstrates how type blossoms into art in a calligrapher’s hand.” Her style has also been described as, “poetry meets flowers, meets artistic script.”
Loy’s hand-lettering of the U.S. Constitution project began after the September 11 attacks in 2001 when she was stopped by the police of three separate occasions beginning in May 2002. She began her Constitution paintings with the preamble. Susan spoke to several school classes on Constitution Day, September 17, 2007. Loy spent over 2500 hours to complete the seven paintings that comprise her hand- lettered and illustrated U.S. Constitution. She also completed paintings of the Declaration of Independence and The Gettysburg Address to complement the Constitution Project.
Susan Loy began exhibiting her artwork in outdoor art shows in the early 1980s , at the neighborhood “Art in the Alley” in Bedford, Virginia. She established Literary Calligraphy in 1983, and was joined by her husband in the year 1990. Together, they expanded their festival and shows they attended, grew the company and opened a store that could accommodate the cutting of custom mats framing pictures and selling reproductions as well as stationary. The year 2003 was the most successful for them. Literary Calligraphy estimates that it sold 3,000 reproductions each year, maintained a list of mailing addresses of 35,000, and employed seven full-time and part-time workers. According to their website, Loy and her company went to numerous art shows across Eastern United States including (for example) Ann Arbor Art Fairs (Ann Arbor, Michigan), St. James Court Art Show (Louisville, Kentucky) and Three Rivers Art Festival (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). They also sold their products at craft events, flower shows, including The Philadelphia Flower Show (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and the Northwest Flower and Garden Show (Seattle, Washington), and at various conventions, such as that of American Library Association and the National Council of Teachers of English.

Loy was a graduate in 1969 of 1969 from Midpark High School in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. She earned her degree in American Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her artwork was part of an exhibition at the Dolibois European Center at Miami University in 2018. Her graduate studies covered literature, art history along with geography and literature from Ohio State University.
Loy attended a calligraphy class during her time in Columbus in 1978. She was completely captivated. She later stated that the pen felt like magic wands when she first picked it up. She believed that her study background in the field of cognitive geographies and the history of art enticed her into the world of art “through the back door,” instead of gaining entry through classes in studios which is the norm for many artists.
Loy has completed numerous paintings and authored a book on the Language of Flowers. The March, 1994 edition of Victorian Sampler magazine featured Susan in an article entitled “The Language of Flowers.” Loy wrote an article for the Emily Dickinson International Society where she described her artistic process for painting a suite of Dickinson poems. In 2001 Susan Loy’s book on the Language of Flowers, Flowers the Angel’s Alphabet, was published. It won the 2002 Benjamin Franklin Award for the Gardening and Reference categories and was named Outstanding Book of the Year from the Independent Book Publishers Association. In 2008, Loy estimated that she had completed 150 modern mandalas. In 2018, Susan wrote a book chapter connecting the Victorian flower language to modern emojis.
