She was the editor at The Melbourne University Law Review in 1975. In 1985, Kenny got her the Menzies Scholarship in Law, along with an award of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust allowed her to attend Magdalen College at the University of Oxford in Oxford, where she completed her doctorate in the year 1988. Her doctorate was overseen by John Finnis.

Kenny was appointed a judge at the Federal Court on 16 October 1998. In November of 2010 she was appointed as president of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. As a judge, Kenny handles a wide array of issues that are before the Federal Court, both as a trial judge as well as on appeal. These include the workplace (AWU BHP Iron Ore v BHP Iron Ore ) employment law (Walker v Citigroup Global Markets Pty Ltd ) intellectual property (McCormick and Co. Inc. v McCormick, D’Arcy v Myriad Genetics Inc anti-discrimination law (Rainsford v Victoria, and AB v Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages ) appeals to the immigration system (ALA15 and ALA15 v Minister for Immigration and Border Protection ) environmental law (Alpine Grazing Trial case ) and taxation law (Haritos v Commissioner of Taxation ).

Kenny was appointed a judge on the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria sitting between the 25th of July 1997 and 15 October 1998. She is the first woman appointed to this court.

Susan Coralie Kenny (born 29 November 1953) is a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia, and was previously as a Judiciary from the Supreme Court of Victoria, in which she was one of the very first women appointed as a judge on the Court of Appeal.

Kenny was an associate of Sir Ninian Stephen. Stephen was then she was a High Court judge in 1979 and in 1980. In 1981, she practiced as barrister and worked in the areas of constitutional, public commercial, tax and public law. Kenny was involved in a number of important cases, including Tasmanian Dams case, the War Crimes case, as well as before the International Court of Justice in East Timor (Portugal v Australia) and Nauru in Nauru v Australia. Kenny was President of the Administrative Review Council from 9 February 1993 until September 30, 1995. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in the year 1996.
