Susan Deborah Chira (born May 18th, 1958 at Manhattan) is an American journalist from the United States. She is the editor-in chief of The Marshall Project. Before that, Chira was a senior reporter and editor who covered gender in The New York Times. From September 2014 to September 16, 2016, she served as a deputy executive editor for the paper and also managed its news reports. She was also the assistant managing editor of news in addition, she was Times’s Foreign News Editor from 2004 until the year 2011.
She also served as the metro reporter in the bureaus of Albany, New York, and Stamford, Connecticut, national education reporter, deputy editor for the Foreign Desk and the editor for The Week in Review, and editor of development of books. In May of 2018 after a brief period as an editor focusing on the issue of gender, she was appointed interim Metro editor in the wake of the departure of Wendell Jamieson. She held that position up to the time of her appointment by Clifford J. Levy to the post within two months.
