His work revolutionized how auctions were conducted. In the early 1990s, Athey discovered the flaws of the lenient dispute process through the sale of computer equipment to the U.S. government at auctions which revealed that auctions that were open that led to numerous legal disputes, and settlements were filled with collusion e.g. auction winners shared a percentage of their profits with bidders who were bidding with them. She also helped British Columbia in the design of the pricing system they used for timber owned by the public. She also published articles on auctions to advertise online and provided advice to Microsoft regarding the layout of their auctions for search advertising.
Athey was a student at Duke University from the age of 16 in the year 1991. While a student at Duke she was able to complete three majors: math, economics, as well as computer science. Her first job was with economics research through working in the summer, making bids for a business which was selling personal computers to the government via auctions for procurement. She also worked on auction-related issues in collaboration with Bob Marshall, a professor at Duke University who worked on defense procurement. He also assisted her in the process of preparing procurement auctions. Her involvement was in a variety different activities while at Duke and was also treasurer of the Chi Omega sorority and as the president for the Field Hockey team.
Athey’s first position was as an assistant, associate professor and Castle Krob Career Development Chair at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for six years before returning to Stanford’s Department of Economics as professor holding the Holbrook Working Chair for another five years.
