Kumar was given the president’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2010 , on the day of the country’s Independence Day. He also received the president’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1998.

Between 2008 and November 15, Kumar was Chairman of the Central Selection Board of Constable in Bihar and was in charge of the hiring more than 32,500 police officers in the Bihar Police. Many recruitment drives were run by C.S.B.C during these years in order to increase the strength of the police force of Bihar State. Kumar is credited with organizing those recruitment campaigns in a timely method that has been tainted by fraud in past.

Sunit Kumar (born 10 November 1955) is former Indian Police Service (I.P.S.) officer from the Bihar Cadre in India and currently serves as chairman of Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) in Bihar, the Bihar state in Bihar. He also been Director General in the Bihar Police in Bihar, the state of Bihar before retiring in November of this year. He is a member of the I.P.S. batch from 1980. He was also the Director of the Bihar Police Academy and Chairman of the Bihar Central Selection Board of Constable (CSBC).

Kumar started his service in the government in the year 1980. Before being a police officer, Kumar was employed for a short time in Jai Prakash University, Chhapra.

In March 2017 Kumar was appointed as the first Chairman of newly created Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) in an order issued by Home Department, Government of Bihar. The service commission was created in order to conduct recruitment examinations and fill vacancies for 19 posts of Group C employees in Government of Bihar.
