At Wimbledon she qualified by winning over Barbara Schwartz and won her first-round match against Tathiana Garbin before falling to Anne Kremer in Round Two. In the finals in the season, she fell in a three- set thriller in the very first $500k Shenzhen tournament to her countrywoman Li Na. The year-end rankings was up to the world’s No. 118.
At the Tashkent Open, Sun fought her way past Iroda Tulyaganova in the final to win the first WTA Tour title of her career and became only the fourth Chinese woman to win a WTA title. On 9 October 2006, she moved to a new career high of world No. 81.
Early in 2006, Sun suffered some extremely tough draws, but fought every inch of the way in tight three-set losses to Amélie Mauresmo in the first round of the Australian Open and Nuria Llagostera Vives in the first round at Gold Coast, only to lose in qualifying for Doha and Dubai.
The year 2003 was the time she made the final of a $50k competition in Modena even though she was a fortunate loser to fellow the countrywoman Yan Zi in the final round of qualifying. After overcoming several top-quality competitors such as Martina Sucha, Maret Ani and Gala Leon Garcia, she was defeated in the final by Melinda Czink.
