Johnston, the creator of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company which was the first Coca-Cola franchisee. The father of his son, Summerfield Johnston Sr. was the Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises. Three sisters were born to him: Katherine Johnston Tudor, Lavinia Johnston, Gillian Johnston and one brother, Robert Johnston.

He was killed by an accident caused by a horse while getting ready for 2007 Stanford U.S. Open championships at the Palm Beach International Polo Club on April 5 2007.

Polo was his sport for 35 years. He was the governor-at-large for the United States Polo Association. He was a co-founder of the North American Polo League in 2005. He was the principal partner in the Flying H Polo Club in Big Horn, Wyoming. He was a patron as well as player for the Skeeterville team. He was captain of the team that won the $200,000 Gold Cup, a 26-goal event in 1988 and in 1982; the Cartier International Open in 1982 as well as in 1982; the USPA Heritage Cup twice; and the 2003 Hall of Fame Cup. The team was three times runners up during the United States Open Polo Tournament.

He joined the familial Coca-Coca Bottling Company and served as its President for its restaurant and food division as well as the company’s Australian company, WinPac Ltd. He later became the president of Coca-Cola Bottling Company Northwest in Minneapolis, Minnesota and of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Cleveland, Tennessee. Following the merger of 1991 between Coca-Cola Enterprises and the Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group with Coca-Cola Enterprises, he served as Vice President of Human Resources, Senior Vice President and President of the Eastern North American Group, responsible for bottling operations across Eastern United States, and Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy as well as Director of Business Development. He resigned in the company of Coca-Cola Enterprises in February 2004 and was on the board of Directors for the period from 2004 until 2007.
