Susanne Lynnette Hickey (born 25 July 1958) is an Australian politician from Australia. She has been an Liberal Party member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly since the election in 2018, representing those who live in Denison (now known as Clark). She was the Hobart’s Lord Mayor from 2014 until 2018. On May 1, 2018, during the first session of the House of Assembly after the election, Labor leader Rebecca White suggested Hickey as Speaker in opposition to one of the candidates from the Liberal party, Rene Hidding. Hickey won the position of Speaker, with backing of Labor as well as the Greens. She quickly resigned herself to the Liberal Party and stated that she would not vote on government bills, even though she stated that she’d “always support the Liberal Government” in regard to trust and supplies. In some cases, Hickey has deprived the Liberal Party of its 13-12 majority in the Assembly.

Hickey has been Speaker of the Tasmanian House of Assembly since May 2018. She unexpectedly won the Speaker position with the support of the opposition Labor and Greens parties over Liberal nominee Rene Hidding, and has stated that she will not attend Liberal Party meetings and will “mostly” vote with the Government, but will assess bills “on their merit”.

Hickey was defeated by the incumbent Lord Mayor Damon Thomas at the 2014 local government elections. She served as the Honourable Lord Mayor for Hobart, Alderman Sue Hickey until her election to the State the Parliament of Tasmania.
