In 2016, USA Gymnastics received the first abuse complaint against Haney. USA Gymnastics announced that Haney was being investigated by them for verbal and emotional abuse. Haney was the subject of at least half a dozen complaints. They claimed that Haney instructed injured gymnasts how to remove their casts and continued training. Her hearing began on February 3, 2020. In the meantime, she was banned from coaching minor athletes.
Witnesses were called to testify about major injuries sustained by Haney’s athletes during the hearing. Laurie Hernandez and Riley McCusker were her two most well-known students. McCusker gave a written statement, while Hernandez spoke verbally. McCusker was a World champion, who was trained by Haney. In 2019, McCusker suffered from rhabdomyolysis. This is a muscle condition that is linked to overtraining. The hearing lasted 13 days and took place over two months, February and March. USA Gymnastics suspended Victoria Levine (co-owner and coach of MG Elite Gymnastics) in March due to allegations she verbally abused athletes.
