Stuart Ian Slater (born 27 March 1969 in Sudbury, Suffolk) is an English former professional footballer who was forward and winger from 1986 until 2009.
The former West Ham teammate, Liam Brady who was then the manager of Celtic was the manager of Celtic when he brought Slater into Glasgow in the form of a PS1.5 million contract in august 1992. Slater first made an appearance the same month as an extra in a 1-1 draw away against Rangers however, he failed to impress at Celtic and, thirteen months later, he was back South in Ipswich Town, having scored three goals in his 43 appearances.
After a short spell on trial at Leicester City, Slater joined Watford. Injuries limited him to only 35 league appearances for the Watford in almost three years and he eventually moved to Australia, joining NSL club, Carlton S.C., in August 1999.
Slater returned to England a year later to join Football Conference club Forest Green Rovers in October 2000, for whom he made 24 league and cup appearances in the 2000–01 season and played in the FA Trophy final at Villa Park in May 2001, when Rovers were beaten 1–0 by Canvey Island.
Director Billy Bonds switched him to the left-wing position towards the end of the 1989-1990 season. He was outstanding to the point that following the 5-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United in March 1990 in March 1990, the Sheffield United defender, Chris Wilder handed Slater a handshake and said, “That’s the closest I’ve been to you all evening.” Similar feats were recorded at Everton in the sixth round of the FA Cup in March 1991 and he scored the second goal for West Ham with a 20-yard strike, in a match that West Ham won 2-1 to get to the semi-finals. West Ham returned to Division One in 1991-92, but plagued by an Achilles injury Slater was unable to score a goal in his 51 games. He refused the chance to sign an extension of his contract and was released in August 1992, signing with Celtic.

Slater was brought on board at West Ham as an apprentice in 1986. Following an extremely difficult first year, he was an integral part of the team’s youth squad. He made his debut with West Ham, still an apprentice, when he was brought in as a substitute in place of Ray Stewart in the Division One home match against Derby County in October 1987. He was given an official contract in April 1988 , just before his 17th birthday. He played a second time in the 1987-88 campaign when he was substituted during the home match in the game against Coventry City in the same month.

- A head-on collision against Russell Osman led to him being ejected within the first few minutes. He fought back to earn an award for the Player of the Award in the following two matches, which were with Newcastle United and Charlton. Charlton as well as Newcastle United, and scored his first goal for the club during an F.A. Cup 5th round match with Charlton on February 29, 1989. In Division Two during 1989-1990 the striker scored nine goals over 50 matches in the league and cup as West Ham reached the semi-final of the League Cup, and made three substitute appearances for the England Under 21 team in the year 1990.
He joined Ipswich Town in a £750,000 deal in September 1993, where he linked up again with his former manager at West Ham, John Lyall, in the Premier League. He stayed at Ipswich for three seasons scoring four goals in 84 appearances before leaving on a free transfer.
