Robert Stewart “Stew” Gavin (born on March 15 1960 ) in Ottawa, Ontario) is a retired professional left-winger of ice hockey who played for the NHL between the years of 1980 and 1993.

Gavin has two children: Taylor (b. the 24th of November 1993) and Max (b. 1989) and both were born by his ex-wife Phyllis Ellis (former Olympic field hockey player, and currently a television producer and actor).

During his 15-year professional hockey career, Gavin recognized the need for a program that would ensure that an athlete’s business affairs were organized and that their interests were protected. Therefore, after his retirement from hockey, Gavin sought to develop this program. After gaining experience at a Bay Street firm, completing numerous industry-related courses and achieving the Certified Financial Planner designation, Gavin founded the Gavin Management Group in 2003. With over 18 years of practice in financial management, insurance and tax planning, Gavin’s roster of clients include professional athletes and leaders in the corporate community. Gavin has also served as the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni Association, and remains on their board of directors, where the association’s efforts have raised more than $4,000,000 for various charitable and gift giving endeavours. Gavin continues to be active on the ice, playing with the alumni at charity events throughout the season; and, is also a member of the Masonic Lodge. In his leisure time, Stew enjoys his private pilot licence, golf and relaxing on his farm in the Ottawa Valley with his family.

Gavin was drafted into his debut in the NHL the following year, after his selection however, after playing in 14 games, he was sent to Maple Leafs minor league AHL affiliate and The New Brunswick Hawks to refine his game. In the following season, Gavin would play in increasing numbers of games for Toronto before 1983 Gavin was the team’s primary checker and was able to play a key role on the penalty-kill. Despite his improved play from Gavin however, Toronto’s Maple Leafs struggled during his time in the team, and in 1984-85 they finished last in the league. In an effort to strengthen the defensive strength of the team following finishing last, Gavin was traded to the Hartford Whalers for defenceman Chris Kotsopoulos on the 7th of October 1985. The first season he played in with Hartford was his most successful performance in terms of stats with a score of 55 points while playing in 76 games. Gavin was a part of three years with the Whalers before being signed from the Minnesota North Stars in the 1988 NHL Waiver Draft. Gavin continued his work as a defensive forward for the North Stars, and helped the team make it to their first Stanley Cup Finals in 1991. However, he was injured in the knee during 1993 and, on the advice of his medical professionals, he decided to retire as a player.

Gavin was a minor player in the OHA most of the time in Toronto Marlboros. Toronto Marlboros, save for one game in the 1976-77 season.
