Steve Nieve (/n aI ‘ I (pronounced “naive”; born Stephen John Nason 21 Feb 1958) is an English musician and composer. Through a long career that spans over 40 years Nieve was a part of Elvis Costello and the Attractions and The Imposters and Madness. Nieve has also had the success of a prolific session musician and has been featured on numerous other artist’s recordings.
Alongside his collaboration alongside Costello, Nieve has released many solo albums. Keyboard Jungle (1983) was his firstalbum, which was a mix of film ersatz and classical scores that he composed using the favorite Steinway piano. The next album Playboy Playboy (1987), was a solo acoustic album that included renditions of the rock music of David Bowie, 10cc, the Specials, X and others and also original compositions. Although the albums were only released within the UK by the label independent Demon Music Group, they were praised by critics and praised by critics for the “display [of] the artist’s wit, compositional talent and abundant instrumental agility.”
Nieve followed these with the albums It’s Raining Somewhere (1996), Mumu (2001) and Windows (2004). His classical opera, Welcome to the Voice, a collaboration with Muriel Téodori, was released on Deutsche Grammophon in May
- The score was interpreted by Barbara Bonney, Sting, Robert Wyatt, Elvis Costello, Amanda Roocroft, Nathalie Manfrino and Sara Fulgoni for the voices. For the music the Brodsky Quartet interpreted a written score, while Marc Ribot, Ned Rothenberg and Nieve improvised. Nieve also composed the score to Téodori’s film Sans Plomb.
In 2001 Costello formed a new backing band consisting of Nieve, Attractions drummer Pete Thomas, and bassist Davey Faragher. The band was subsequently dubbed the Imposters. Elvis Costello & the Imposters have toured extensively and released the albums When I Was Cruel (2002), Cruel Smile (2003), The Delivery Man (2004), The River in Reverse (2006) with Allen Toussaint and Momofuku (2008), National Ransom (2010), Look Now (2018). In 2020 Nieve won a Grammy for his work with Elvis Costello and the Imposters on Look Now.
In the middle of the 1980s, Costello began to work less often in the Attractions and quit working with them completely between 1987 until 1993. The time between 1987 and 1993 was when Nieve concentrated on working as a session musician with other musicians (the Neville Brothers, Hothouse Flowers, Graham Parker, Squeeze, Tim Finn, Kirsty MacColl, Madness, Nick Heyward and David Bowie). In the year 1986 Nieve joined the collective called the Perils of Plastic with ex-Deaf School singer Steve Allen, releasing three non-charting singles in UK during 1986 as well as 1987. At the same time Nieve was the leader of the house group (billed in the form of Steve Nieve and The Playboys) on the UK television series The Last Resort with Jonathan Ross.

Nieve was born in London, England, and went to London’s Royal College of Music, however, he left at the age of 1977 in order to be a part of Costello’s back- group the Attractions. Nason earned his name as a musician “Nieve” (pronounced “naive”) during the Attractions the first tour with Stiff Records. The name was given by fellow tourmate Ian Dury who had been stunned by Nason’s innocent question, “What’s a groupie?” Prior to that, at most briefly, he was performing under his stage name “Steve A’dore” (a pun on the word stevedore).
Nieve performed on organ, piano as well as other keyboard instruments on the majority of Costello’s albums during the following ten years and included on The records This Year’s Model (1978), Imperial Bedroom (1982) and Blood & Chocolate (1986). In the album of 1984, Costello album Goodbye Cruel World and its accompanying tour, he was described with the title “Maurice Worm.” The credit for his instrument on the album wasn’t for keyboards, but rather for playing “random racket”. He also wrote a song in The Attractions’ Costello- less album, Mad About the Wrong Boy under the name Norman Brain, in collaboration with his former girlfriend, Fay Hart. (He also composed other songs for the album under the name Steve Nieve.)
Costello reunited the Attractions for 1994’s album Brutal Youth. Although the reunion was relatively short-lived (they split again in 1996), the Costello/Nieve collaborations never stopped. They have toured as a duo, and Nieve has contributed keyboards to all of Costello’s albums since the mid- 1990s, including 1998’s Burt Bacharach collaboration Painted From Memory, 2001’s Anne Sofie von Otter collaboration For the Stars and 2003’s North.
