Christoff was chosen 24th overall during the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. He was a part of in the North Stars for 20 games following the Olympics with eight goals and scoring 15 points. In the following season was his time to play 56 games and scored 29 points and 26 goals and was among the Stars most effective players as Minnesota was defeated in its 1982 Stanley Cup finals to the New York Islanders. Christoff also played during the 2011 Canada Cup tournament as a player on Team USA. In the 1981-82 season, Christoff appeared in 69 games with 25 goals and scoring 55 points which was a record high for a player of his career. Even though he was a well-known figure within Minnesota, Christoff was traded to the Calgary Flames for the 1982-83 season, but he only used for 45 games with 17 points and scoring nine goals. From 1983 to 1984, Christoff was a final year in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings, starting with 58 games.

Steve Christoff grew up in Richfield, Minnesota and graduated from Richfield High School. As a player on Richfield’s Richfield High School hockey team He was named MVP of the team in his junior and senior seasons as well as being selected as a member of be on the Minnesota High School All-State First Team as well as the U.S. High School All-American Team in his senior year of 1975-76. The school he played for was the state championship in during his senior year and was among the most highly-recruited U.S. hockey players in 1976. Before he made the move to professional hockey, Christoff attended the University of Minnesota where he was a player in the Minnesota Gophers for three seasons from 1976 to 1979. He led the team’s scoring in his second year with the score of 66 points (32 goals and 34 assists) and was selected as a member of the WCHA All-Star Second Team. In his third season, he led the team in scoring and scored 77 goals (38 goal and 39 assists). In what was to be his last college game, on the 23rd of March 1979 Christoff had a shot and added an assist in helping Minnesota achieve its third NCAA championship in the history of the school by winning 4-3 against North Dakota. Christoff made his international debut with Team USA at the 1979 Ice Hockey World Championship tournament in Moscow.

Christoff recently retired as an airline pilot for Minneapolis-based Endeavor Air since retiring from hockey. He was named one of the 50 greatest players in University of Minnesota hockey history as part of “Legends on Ice” tribute in 2001.
