Gengoroh Tagame is one of the most popular and richest Illustrator who was born on February 3, 1964 in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Tagame is also regarded in the field of art history and archiver of gay Japanese sexuality and has written a two-volume artbook collection on the development of gay erotica art throughout Japan since the 50s through the present day, Ri Ben Nogeieroteitsukuato (Nihon the gei Erotikku ato Gay Erotic Art in Japan).
Tagame has been hailed as the most influential manga creator in gay culture in Japan to the present and “the most talented and most famous author of sado- masochistic gay manga”. His portrayal of males with hairy and muscular bodies has been described as a trigger for a shift in the fashion of gay men in 1995 away from Bishonen stereotypes of clean-shaven, slim bishonen and in the direction of muscularity and chubbiness. Tagame’s work has been criticized by gay manga creator Susumu Hirosegawa, who referred to it as “SM gekijo” (S&M theater) for its brutality as well as its lack of elaborate narratives.
In the mid-2010s, Tagame began creating all-ages manga in addition to his erotic works. His first all-ages work was Otouto no Otto (弟の夫 , My Brother’s Husband) , serialized in Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine in Japan and published in English by Pantheon Books. The series received universal acclaim, and has been awarded excellence awards at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2015, and the Japan Cartoonists Association Award in 2018. In March 2018, Monthly Action began serialization of Our Colors, Tagame’s second all-ages manga.
A small amount of Tagame’s work has been published in English; a short story, “Standing Ovations”, was included in the third issue of the erotic comics anthology Thickness, and in July 2012, Picturebox announced a short story collection, The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame, for 2013 release. The latter was the author’s first North American and English-language collection and the first completely bara work published in English in a print format. The book collects short works spanning 15 years of Tagame’s career, including a new story commissioned for the book by book designer Chip Kidd. Endless Games was published in 2013 in an English translation by the German publisher the Bruno Gmünder Verlag. Gunji, Fisherman’s Lodge (both 2014) and The Contracts of the Fall (2015) were published in English by the same publisher.
His work contains “virile males, or youths, and their apprenticeship of physical and mental submission”. Some of his most notable works are Jujitsu Kyoshi during B Product; Emono, Shirogane no Hana (3 volume.) and Pride (3 volume.) at G-Project. Pride is a story about a male power-top who is discovered by his more masculine teacher to have sexually ferocious tendencies. He also is taught to become submissive to the harsh dominance. Naburi mono (“Laughing stock”) serialized within G-Men from 1994. tells about a yakuza-like strongman who is in the love of a wrestler who he is ordered to kidnap. The story ends with their ritualistic suicide.
