In 1993, Benson confronted more controversy in his own LDS Church, when he declared the fact that his father, who was approaching his 94th birthday, suffered from the senility, which was hidden by church leaders. The following the same year Benson abruptly left his church. He is now an opponent of religion as he spoke at the Freedom from Religion’s annual conferences and writing in the magazine Freethought Today, “If, as the true believers claim, the word ‘gospel’ means good news, then the good news for me is that there is no gospel, other than what I can define for myself, by observation and conscience. As a freethinking human being, I have come not to favor or fear religion, but to face and fight it as an impediment to civilized advancement.”

In the latter part of the 1980s, he was initially a fan but later became a prominent critic in the case of Evan Mecham, the first Mormon to become as governor in Arizona. Benson’s comments caused controversy among members of Arizona’s Mormon population, prompting several LDS Church members to seek the assistance of his grandfather on the issue. As a result of this controversy governor Mecham phoned Benson and advised him to stop drawing negative cartoons of him otherwise his eternal soul could be put in danger. Benson was then removed from his post on the High Council of the stake.
Benson is the grandson of Benson, the former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and the former LDS Church president Ezra Taft Benson was a student at Brigham Young University, from where he graduated cum laude and then became the cartoonist of the Arizona Republic in 1980. Benson was transferred towards Tacoma Morning News Tribune in 1990. In 1997, a Benson cartoon used the image of a firefighter carrying a dead child to comment on the death sentence that had just been imposed on Oklahoma City bombing defendant Timothy McVeigh. Benson forcefully defended his work against some readers’ contentions that the cartoon was insensitive.
