Stephen Port (born 22 February 1975) is Stephen Port (born 22 February 1975) is a British criminal who was convicted of serial rape and serial murderer. Port is accountable for the murder of at least four individuals and for multiple sexual assaults. Port was sentenced to life with a life-long order on November 25, 2016, that means he won’t be eligible for parole and is not likely never to be released from jail.

It was reported that the Metropolitan Police also reported in 2016 that they were looking into some 58 deaths that were not explained and involving date- raped drugs, however an official spokesperson stated that there was no evidence that Port was connected to any of the deaths.

On 23 November 2016, Port was convicted of the assaults by penetration, rapes and murders of Anthony Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, Daniel Whitworth, 21, and Jack Taylor, 25, as well as the rapes of three other men he drugged, and ten counts of administering a substance with intent, and four sexual assaults. He was found guilty on all counts. In total, eleven men were known victims of Port’s crimes.

In 2017, the BBC aired the documentary How Police Missed the Grindr Killer which examined the botched investigation into Port’s murders. In 2019, it was announced the BBC would produce a drama thriller titled The Barking Murders written by Neil McKay which will be based on the investigation led by the families of Port’s victims. Stephen Merchant will portray Port while Sheridan Smith and Jamie Winstone will feature in supporting roles.

The first victim of his murder, Anthony Walgate, 23, who was a fashion student from Hull and who at times was employed as an escort was approached by Port on the 17th of June, 2014 as if he was a customer and was offered PS800 to pay for his services. they then arrived in Barking station. On June 19, 2014 Walgate died just before 8 am. Port himself, in anonymity, phoned emergency services to report that a child had “collapsed or had had a seizure or was drunk” in the street near his apartment. The evidence connecting Port to the death of Walgate was not found at the time of the incident. Port was found guilty of obstructing the justice system in March of 2015, as his version of events to the police differed. Port was sentenced to eight months before being was released in June, and was electronically identified.

The bodies of four men were discovered near Port’s apartment in less than an year after the summer of 2014. Whitworth which suggested that his involvement in the death of another of the victim, Kovari and also that Kovari had committed suicide because of guilt.

At the Old Bailey on 25 November 2016, Mr Justice Openshaw sentenced Port to life imprisonment with a whole life order.
