Hester held the position of chief financial officer and Head of Support Division, until May 2000. From May 2000 to September 2001, he was Global Head of the Fixed Income Division.

Hester married Canadian-born Barbara Abt in 1991, and they had two children together. They met when both were working for Credit Suisse. They separated and divorced in 2010.
