The father of her Leung Kam Tim was mathematician from Hong Kong, who is now in France. When Talman was around four years older, her mother got married to Swiss painting artist Roland Thalmann, from whom she got her name.
In 1979, Talman began her first workshop in Zurich which produced a limited range of hand-made shoes. The shoes, which stood out due to their lightness and unique color, were regarded as innovative in the early days and led to a partnership with a distributor who was larger. In 1980, she launched her very first line under the brand under the name of Stefi Talman. One of the four designs available in a range of colors included a shoe dubbed ZIP. Half-boots with a zipper that crossed into the inner part to an angle. The design, which swiftly became a hit and has been a frequent model and re-invented, has sparked the fashion industry’s attention and brought Stefi Talman’s Stefi Talman label to an international market. The label was shut down in 1986 following seven collections, and numerous shifts in the manufacturers and producers.
1994 saw the designer re-launch her label Stefi Talman in Zürich. Since then Talman has worked closely with a shoe manufacturer located near Venice, Italy. In 1999 she expanded the label with a new range of wallets, bags and accessories. In 2001 Stefi Talman opened her own boutique in Zürich, Switzerland.
