The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Welch in November of 2011. The season began as a player for his team, the Bradenton Marauders. In his first game for the Marauders that was played with St. Lucie, Welch was struck by an Ryan Fraser pitch with the bases filled in the 11th innings, which was able which resulted in Gift Ngoepe scoring, and give the Marauders an easy win. The first time that Welch was promoted to Double A occurred in June 2012 when he was promoted the Double-A Altoona Curve. On November 12, Welch signed a new contract with the Pirates.

Welch was a player in The Adelaide Bite of the Australian Baseball League (ABL) from 2010 until 2017. After being absent for in the season 2017-18, Welch returned to the Bite for the 2018-19 season. Following the end of the season Welch made a public announcement of his decision to retire. He led the club all time for games (284) and hits (258) and runs (160) as well as hits at home (35) along with RBI (169)

Stefan Robert Welch (born 12 August 1988 in Adelaide, Australia) is an Australian professional baseball player for Adelaide Bite. Adelaide Bite from the Australian Baseball League. He was a player in The New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox organisations.

He was selected by Australian national coach Tony Harris in 2005 and later was signed by the New York Mets in 2005 at 16 years old. At the age of 16, Welch was able to make his Claxton Shield debut with the South Australia Bite where he hit 0 for 1 and three walks. He made his professional debut in 2007 with the GCL Mets where he batted .288 during his first season. The year 2009 was the time he was two times chosen to the Australia national team in baseball; at the beginning of March, for the World Baseball Classic in 2009, and later for the World Baseball Classic, and later during September to play in the 2009 Baseball World Cup. Welch played in the seasons of 2010 and 2011 as a player for the class A advanced St. Lucie Mets.

Welch was traded to the Boston Red Sox in early June 2013, starting with the High A Salem Red Sox. He then got promoted to AA in March 2014 and played the season in Portland, Maine.
