He was selected to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round, which was 37th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
On the 5th of October, 2013 on the 5th of October, 2013, The Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League signed Legein to an official tryout contract. The 2013-14 season saw Legein was in seven games for the Marlies before deciding to sign for the rest period with Sweden as a player with VIK Vasteras HK of the second division, HockeyAllsvenskan. Following the year, Legein belatedly signed in Germany with the DEL2 club Heilbronner Falken.
On the 20th of October in 2009, Legein’s name was traded to the Blue Jackets to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a minor leaguer Mike Ratchuk. Stefan Legein was later traded on October 12, 2011, to the Philadelphia Flyers, along with the 2012 6th round draft pick for the Los Angeles Kings for future options.

In 2007 Legein was a part of Team Canada in the 2007 Super Series against Russia. Legein was then selected to be part of Team Canada in the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Pardubice, Czech Republic.
Legein spent the majority of his time in the OHL and only played one season in a different league called which was the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (OPJHL) before being selected to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Legein was a participant at the 2007 CHL Top Prospects Game and the OHL Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 2007, in which he was awarded the fastest skater contest, running one skate in 14.109 seconds. Additionally, he scored three points during the game (2 goals one assist). In the season 2008/09 Legein was the subject of headlines after his announcement that he would be retiring from the sport, though there was no official reason given at the time. Later that season the player stated that he’d like to get back into the game and join with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL for the rest of the season.
On September 2, 2015, Legein returned to the United States and signed a one- year contract with Los Angeles Kings now ECHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. He ended his career playing semi-professionally for the Stoney Creek Generals who compete for the Allan Cup in the 2016–17 season.
