He was offered the chance to play for Belgium towards the end of the campaign, having not represented the full France side; however, he turned it down with the hope that he would eventually break into the full French squad. He scored in Fulham’s 3–1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in October 2003. During the same month, Malbranque would sign a new four-year contract to keep him at Craven Cottage until 2007.

In February 2004, after failing to break into France’s senior squad, Malbranque expressed an interest in representing the Belgian national team. However, the Red Devils’ coach Aimé Anthuenis claimed that Malbranque was not eligible to represent the country. A month later, Malbranque was called into the senior France squad for a friendly against the Netherlands but was an unused squad member.

He finally made the transfer to the Premier League in 2001, signing with Fulham for what is that is believed at PS4.5 million.
