Simon Whelehan is one of the most popular and richest Hurler who was born on July 27, 1976 in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. Simon Whelehan (born 27 July 1976) is an Irish Hurler who was a full-back in the Offaly senior team in hurling.

Whelehan made his debut appearance in the team’s squad during the 1998 championship. He then was a regular participant of the starting fifteen , until his retirement following winning the championship in 2004. He was awarded only one All-Ireland medal. Whelehan was also an All-Ireland finalist on one occasion.

Offaly surrendered their All-Ireland crown the following year but returned to the All-Ireland decider again in 2000 in a repeat of the Leinster final. Kilkenny’s D.J. Carey capitalised on an Offaly mistake after just six minutes to start a goal-fest for “the Cats”. Carey scored 2–4 in all, sharing his second goal with Henry Shefflin who also scored a goal in the second-half. At the full-time whistle Kilkenny were the champions by 5–15 to 1–14.

Whelehan won further championship medals in 2000 and 2001 as Birr retained their status as the kingpins of Offaly hurling. Once again Birr defeated Castletown in the provincial decider to give Whelehan his third Leinster medal. Once again Birr qualified for the All-Ireland final with Clarinbridge providing the opposition. A Declan Pilkington goal inside sixty seconds was the perfect start, although the Westerners did recover to lead by 1-4 to 1 -2 at the break. With wind advantage, Birr took control and secured a 2-10 to 1–5 victory. It was Whelehan’s second All-Ireland medal, his first as captain.

Whelehan made his debut as a senior for Offaly in Offaly’s Leinster championship match with Meath during 1998. He did not take part in Offaly’s provincial final loss to Kilkenny. This loss prompted Kilkenny’s Offaly director, Babs Keating, to refer to the team as “sheep in a heap” and then he announced his resignation. Offaly’s chances of winning the championship were at risk, but they fought off Antrim at the All-Ireland quarter-final , and were able to play Clare for the semifinal. The first match ended in the draw and needed to be replayed. However the replay delayed due to an error in the timekeeping of official Jimmy Cooney. After a protest at the playing field in Croke Park by Offaly supporters, it was agreed the teams of Clare and Offaly would play each other for the third time. Whelehan’s team took the win in the third game and were able for Kilkenny for the championship. The day after, Brian Whelahan delivered one of his finest Offaly performances scoring 6 points. Offaly defeated Leinster final loss by taking the All-Ireland final with 2-13-1-16. This was the first time that Whelehan won an All-Ireland medal.
