The Tale of Juliet is van Ruyven’s own book that tells her story of growing up as a child-soldier within the Philippines to achieving success as an immigrant to Canada. After the publication of the novel, van Ruyven was recognized by People Asia Magazine as one of the recipients of The 2005 People of the Year in the Philippines and was awarded an Honorable Mention for the Best Non- Fiction book during the Independent Publisher Award in Western Canada.
Following a visit to one Chicken Soup for the Soul author Mark Victor Hansen’s personal growth seminars in 2004 van Ruyven was encouraged to create a memoir of her life. Thanks to her publisher she was able to publish and sell the novel, and it was an instant bestseller across the Philippines. Following her wedding on the 27th of September 1987 van Ruyven immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada together with her husband. There were two children: Michelle as well as Catherine. As a stay-at-home mom van Ruyven was a typing positions and gave tutorials on computers to her neighbors. Van Ruyven then accepted a position at Discovery Toys as a sales executive.
