Simon Upton is one of the most popular and richest New Zealand Politician who was born on February 7, 1958 in New Zealand. Simon David Upton (born 7 February 1958) is a former New Zealand politician and member of the New Zealand Parliament from 1981 to 2001 as a member of his party, the National Party, and the present Minister of Parliament for the Environment.
In April of 2017 the commissioner was appointed by the parliament to take on the role of the next commissioner of the Parliament for Environment. He succeeded the previous commissioner Dr Jan Wright, when her second term, which lasted for five years, expired in October 2017.
He quit Parliament in 2001 and relocated to France. He was appointed to an full-time position with the OECD as Chair of its Round Table on Sustainable Development that he served until the year 2005. He was also a part-time consultant at PriceWaterhouseCoopers for several years. In April 2010 , he was appointed director of the OECD Environment Directorate, in Paris, France.

When he joined to the National Party in 1976, He was Chairman of the New Zealand Young Nationals among other posts. He was also the youngest MP of Waikato during the election of 1981. At the 1984 election the MP was elected for Raglan and held it until the election of 1996, after which he switched to becoming an MP on a list.
Upton was one of the youngest Ministers of New Zealand of the Cabinet during 1990 after which he was appointed Minister of Health and Minister of the Environment as well as the minister of Research, Science and Technology. As the minister for Environment, Upton promoted the enactment of the Resource Management Act 1991. He was the one who established the Crown Research Institutes. One of Upton’s most controversial acts during his time in charge of the Health portfolio was the introduction of the public hospital charge in the amount of $50 to cover overnight stay, which was later canceled when the election of 1993 approached. Upton also has an interest in sustainable development. He was chair of the of the OECD’s Round Table on Sustainable Development and is a founding member on the Board of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
