He was appointed an judge in the High Court of Uganda in May 2008. He was Chief High Court Judge Resident In Lira (2008-2010) and in Soroti (2010-2013) as well as In Masindi (2013-2015). In October of 2015 the Judge Byabakama was among Six High Court Judges who were appointed for the Court of Appeal.

He was a law student in Makerere University, Uganda’s largest and longest- running public university which he graduated from in 1980 with the Master of Laws (LLB) degree. The following year, he was awarded an Diploma for Legal Practitioner through the Law Development Centre, in Kampala which is the capital city of Uganda. He was accepted as a lawyer to Uganda Bar. He was also appointed as Deputy Director of Public Prosecution and was promoted to Deputy Director of Public Prosecution when he was appointed to on the bench. He joined in the month of May of 2008.
On 18 November 2016, Justice Simon Byabakama was named as Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Uganda, replacing Engineer Badru Kiggundu, whose 14-year, two-term reign had ended.
