He began his career at Fajr Sepasi, and moved to Iranian giants Esteghlal in 2004where He formed an excellent alliance with Reza Enayati at the front. He was among the main players of the club in their 2005 and 2006 IPL championship. In July 2007, he moved in his home in the UAE to join Al-Dhafra. In the 2008 transfer window, he returned to Iranian bigwigs Esteghlal again, and was crowned the league in his debut season following a series of thrilling matches. He signed an agreement with Tractor Sazi on June 18, 2011. On July 1, 2012 He signed a two-year agreement with Esteghlal.
After his involvement in the league championship of Esteghlal His former coach, Amir Ghalenoei, called Akbarpour to the senior Iran national team. Akbarpour made his debut during the Asian Cup qualification match against Taiwan in February. The next time he played was against UAE where he was a part of with his old teammate Reza Ayati’s goal. He was back with Team Melli in 2009 under Ali Daei and played few minutes in South Korea in February 2009 when the game ended with a 1-1 draw in Tehran.
