Shigeru Ishiba (Shi Po Mao , Ishiba Shigeru, born on February 4, 1957) is a Japanese politician from Japan. Ishiba is an active participant in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Heisei-Kenkyukai (part of the faction headed by Fukushiro Nukaga) up to the year the year 2011. In his role as Director General, he was Director of the Japan Defense Agency from 2002-2004 and the Minister for Defense from 2007 until 2008, and the in charge for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The LDP lost the 2009 election to the government and, in 2012, after contesting president for the LDP and losing to Shinzo Abe, he accepted the post of Secretary-General for the LDP on the 27th of September, 2012. Since 3 September until his 3 August 2016 appointment, he was as cabinet minister, overseeing regional economic development and policies to reverse the decline in population.

Ishiba was appointed the minister of Defense to the cabinet of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on the 26th of September 2007 and was in the post until the 1st of August in 2008. Ishiba is the only individual who was a member of the cabinet under Fukuda to publicly affirm faith in UFOs, following Nobutaka Machimura. In that regard, he appeared on the Japanese television program that included dubbed scenes of the national Geographic channel’s Alien Invasion series in June 2012.

Ishiba has repeatedly stated that he believes that Japan needs its own equivalent of the United States Marine Corps to be able to defend its many small islands, in 2010 when he was policy chief for the LDP in opposition, and as secretary-general of the party in March 2013 after the LDP regained government.
