Salman Khurshid Biography

Salman Khurshid is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 1, 1953 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Salman Khurshid Alam Khan (born 1 January 1953) is an Indian politician and senior advocate. He is also an prominent author, and law professor. He was the Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of External Affairs. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. Lawyers are among his professions and a journalist who was elected from the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency in the General Election of 2009. He is from the Farrukhabad region. Prior to that, his election to the 10th Lok Sabha (1991-1996) from the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency. He was elected his Union deputy minister of Commerce in June of 1991, and then became his Union Minister of State in charge of the External Relations (Jan. 1993 to June of 1996). He began his political career in 1981 as an officer on Special Duty within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) under the leadership of the prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Salman Khurshid appeared for Students Islamic Movement of India, the group that is prohibited in India and regularly indicted by Indian authorities with terrorist acts as the group’s defense lawyer. He appealed the 2002 ban. In June 2006, the Supreme Court of India rejected the appeal, noting “the appeal against the ban should be first argued before the tribunal established for the purposes”. When asked about his appearance, Khurshid declared :

In the General Election of 2009, he was elected as Member of Parliament from Farrukhabad, winning as a candidate of the Indian National Congress, with 169,351 votes. He became the Union Minister of State (with Independent Charges) of Corporate Affairs and Minority Affairs in the Government of India. He took over as Minister on Friday, 29 May 2009. In the Cabinet reshuffle of 12 July 2011, he was made Cabinet Minister for Law and Justice, and for Minority Affairs, in the Government of India. One of his disciples, Zishan Pervez, had been his constituency co ordinator for the General Election in Farrukhabad in the year 2010.

He came 4th and lost his deposit in the Lok Sabha elections 2014 contesting from the same constituency of Farrukhabad. In the next parliamentary election (2019), he stood 3rd in with 55,258 votes. He got only 5.51% of the total votes polled and lost his deposit again.

Salman Khurshid was also director for “The Contemporary Conservative: Selected Writings of Dhiren Bhagat” which was published in 1990.

India Today and Aaj Tak claimed that the Khurshids had swindled funds, which was that they denied. A ruling group in Congress has firmly defended Khurshid however, a the former social activist Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party began what was described as “indefinite agitation”. Furious by the accusations, Khurshid called Arvind Kejriwal the ‘guttersnipe’. A total of 7.1 million was said to have been spent by Salman Khurshid, which was allegedly financed through the state to purchase tricycles for disabled people.

In 2009, incumbent president Sirajuddin Qureshi beat Salman Khurshid for the presidency of India Islamic Cultural Centre. Campaign for the election was very intense which became high-profile with Khurshid’s entry in the fray.
