This time Buechele simply needed to hang his lead, however, he was 10 for 10 , netting the 89 yards and scored a touchdown.
Buechele was the starting quarterback in Texas the opening game for the year, which was a loss 51-41 to Maryland. In that game, he set record-setting highs in yards, attempts, and completions. However, due in part to injuries the team was forced to replace him with the backup player Sam Ehlinger in subsequent games against San Jose State and USC. Buechele returned to the top of the line in Texas in the victory over Iowa State, but then injuries kept him out of losses in the following two games in the games against Kansas State and Oklahoma, however, he was able to take the field for a few minutes in the final game. Buechele returned to the field to begin the game against Baylor, TCU and Kansas and lost only in the TCU game. Buechele then played in his first West Virginia game, but only played in the first two games before being dropped in favor of Ehlinger. Buechele ended his season playing as Ehlinger’s back-up the games played in games against Texas Tech and Missouri.
