Sendai Tanaka is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on March 26, 1972 in Higashimatsushima, Japan. As he began his journey to Mexico, Tanaka heard boxers who were trained by the International Hall of Famer Argentine Amilcar Brusa (1922-2011) declaring the fact that they would have enjoyed in a blissful boxer’s life because Brusa was there. In the time that Brusa had been a coach to the Golden Boy-sponsored boxers from Los Angeles and Big Bear City, California, Tanaka was a student of his. Tanaka acknowledged Brusa as the most skilled coach and called him Maestro. He got his advice each time he saw Brusa.
In Feb. 1995 Tanaka was proficient in Spanish language. He traveled to Mexico for a few hours of practice, with 7100 USD (in the time) from a part-time job. He started his career in Mexico however, his ultimate goal was Argentina. Tanaka enjoys Argentina and boxing in the country. When Tanaka is able to spare then he travelled to Mexico towards Argentina.
Every morning, He has been running and training his abdominal muscles. While he worked as an employee of Teiken Boxing Gym, he also hoped to train boxers in various countries and improve his skill as a boxing trainer. Tanaka visited Brusa in Santa Fe, Argentina in January 2010. He daily went to the boxing gym with Brusa to coach boxers there. After they finished all boxers’ workout, Brusa make Tanaka wear gloves to train him. Then, they went to the sports gym run by Brusa’s daughter, and talked about the history of boxing or Brusa’s own in his room within that gym. He has continued to be a trainer in order to become an Amílcar Brusa.
Tanaka has so far trained the world champions such as Erik Morales, Lorenzo Parra, Edwin Valero, Jorge Linares, Román González, Takahiro Aō et al. In March 2011, Tanaka’s hometown Higashimatsushima was devastated by the Tōhoku earthquake. His two-story family home’s first floor was submerged by the tsunami. Although his family was safe, his nearby relatives were swallowed by the tsunami. However, since Aō’s first defense was scheduled in early April, Tanaka remained in Tokyo saying nothing about it, and continued training. Tanaka had been chosen for the twenty-second Eddie Townsend Award in 2011, but declined it for personal reasons.
When Tanaka was just 22 years old, then a young Marco Antonio Barrera came to the gym where he trained and requested his focus mitts to be used. Barrera was set to take on the title of world champion for the first time in the month of March 1995. After a day of training, Tanaka agreed to become his trainer along with Rudy Perez (1955-2013) in response to his request. Barrera took the first World title fight. After that, Tanaka guided him to an victory in the bout with Naseem Hamed, who was fighting in the month of April. While Barrera was resting, Tanaka observed the teaching techniques of various trainers. He was exposed to training at meetings and conferences held in Mexico and in the United States and Argentina. He also received their advice in learning the methods, and also coached boxers from the region.

Sendai Tanaka (Tian Zhong Sem Da , Tanaka Sendai, born March 26 in 1972) is a Japanese boxing coach. He is among the very few notable trainers from Asia and has gained a name for himself especially for his focus mitts.
Tanaka is a native of Yamoto, Miyagi (current Yamoto, Higashimatsushima, Miyagi), Japan. When he was fourteen, and began the 3rd grade in high school the year 1986, he began learning boxing from an ex-boxer who was a student at Chuo University who lived near the home of his family. He was a member of Sendai Gym (current Shin-Nihon Sendai Boxing Gym) during the very first year of Miyagi Prefectural Fisheries High School. After completing his amateur professional career with a score at 18-5 Tanaka made his pro debut on April of 1991, and had compiled a record of 2-3-1 in the lightweight and featherweight divisions before February 1994.
In December 2002, Akihiko Honda who has been looking for excellent trainers who can bring out the boxers’ ability all over the world, requested him to become a trainer of his Teiken Boxing Gym. Tanaka started to coach in Japan at times other than Barrera’s training, and signed a deal with Teiken Boxing Gym in May 2003. While instructing Jorge Linares intensively, he made some other boxers spar with Barrera, or made them participate in his training camps. In Linares’ first world title shot in Las Vegas, Nevada in July 2007, Tanaka served as the chief second among Rudy Pérez, Rudy Hernández and Kenny Adams. Just before the gong sounded, Tanaka tapped on his back saying that “Thanks for making me a second of the world champion. Let’s go”. Tanaka later told that he changed the plan during the fight and Linares neatly ran it since he was a superior boxer.
