Selim Giray is one of the most popular and richest Musicologist who was born on June 6, 1970 in Istanbul, Turkey. Selim Giray (born 6 June 1970 in Istanbul) is native of Turkey. He is an American violinist as well as a researcher, clinician, and conductor.

In his time in Pittsburg State University, Giray has attracted international students which include Paraguay, Romania, China, South Korea, and Turkey. In the past, his students had won many competitions, including several Chamber Music and Concerto competitions, as well as the highly famous American String Teachers Association Solo Competition. Winner of the 2006 Kansas Chapter. The students of Giray have been admitted into master’s programs in Yale University, Rice University and at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Missouri – Kansas City and The Florida State University with assistantships. They are also members of various orchestras, including those of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas and The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Kansas City Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Detroit Symphony along with the Chicago Symphony.

A frequent educator, Giray presented at numerous conference and clinics such as The Midwest Clinic in 2013 as well as two years earlier in the American String Teachers’ Association’s National Conference. Giray’s latest article entitled “To Tilt or Not to Tilt” was published in the November edition of the American String Teacher, a peer-reviewed quarterly journal of the American String Teachers Association. In the past, Giray has interviewed Eliot Chapo for The Strad (July 2010). Additionally, he recorded a disc, called Turkish Music for Violin & Piano for ERMMedia with pianist Dr. June Chun-Young (2010 released through Naxos). Additionally He edited Adnan’s violin concerto for Peermusic classical Europe. In 2003, Edwin Mellen Press published Giray’s book, entitled “A Biography of the Turkish Composer Ahmed Adnan Saygun and a Discussion of his Violin Works”. In 2003, the Ministry of Culture of Turkey released the same book in Turkish and included an introduction written by the the then minister of Culture, Istemihan Talay.

As a doctoral student at Florida State University, Giray took classes in the studio of Eliot Chapo, former Concertmaster of orchestras like the New York Philharmonic and the Dallas Symphony. In 1992, he was awarded an honorary fellowship from the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and East Carolina University, where Giray studied with Fritz Gearhart. Born in Istanbul, Giray graduated from Istanbul State Conservatory as well as Mimar Sinan State Conservatory and Mimar Sinan State Conservatory, where he learned from Saim Akcil.

In 2014, Giray performed for the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C., at the residence of the ambassador of Australia. Performed a violin recital with Dr. Özgür Ünaldı (Semifinalist at Chopin International Piano Competition in Rome, and Second Prize winner at International Johannes Brahms Piano Competition in Pörtschach, Austria) at Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul International Spectral Music Conference, and Uludağ University, Conservatory of Music, in Bursa, Turkey. During the summers of 2008 and 2013, he visited Asunción, Paraguay for master classes and performances as soloist and conductor. Giray performed at the 34th International Istanbul Music Festival as a member of Istanbul Chamber Orchestra. Also, he played as Acting Concertmaster of Istanbul Chamber Orchestra in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he performed in front of an elite audience of foreign dignitaries. During that trip, Giray gave lectures and master classes at Istanbul Technical University, Bilkent University, and Yıldız University in Turkey, and Edison Academy in Germany.
