In 2006, he began working for Caracol Television as presenter, and later made his debut on Noticias Caracol as the central edition’s presenter alongside Maria Lucia Fernandez. In the course of that season, he presented the shows Nada mas que la verdad and Mesa de noche, both produced by Caracol Television. From 2009 to 2013 , he was the director of the political show Noticiero N& in which dolls portrayed political figures and those from their Colombian entertainment industry. On September 2nd 2013, he took over as director of Voz Populi, the Blu Radio’s program.
In 1998, he was named director of the show Yo, Jose Gabriel and the sub director of the radio channel La FM, that same year, he began working on private television on Canal RCN as presenter of the news of the program Yo, Jose Gabriel and sub director of Noticias RCN, where he hosted the central edition and other shows.

His journalism career began as a sportswriter for Noticiero Cripton, in 1987 which he continued to work as an economic and general editor. He was appointed in the year 1991 to was made Editor-in-Chief for the Noticias QAP, a position that he held for one year. Following that, he was appointed a presenter for the same show. He was presenter in 1995. became a journalist and presenter of the morning news of Buenos Dias Colombia. He was a part of Noticiero de las 7 working as an economic editor and host. Vargas was the host of the Concurso National of Colombia’s Belleza between 1996 and 2004.
In May of 1996 Vargas was married in the Cathedral in Santa Marta, Colombia with the presenter and journalist Ines Maria Zabarain. With whom he has three kids: Laura, Sofia and Felipe Vargas Zabarain. The year 2013 was the first time Vargas had a gastrical operation, losing 27 kilograms.
Vargas studied Social Communication and Journalism at Pontifical Xavierian University, later did a major in Economic journalism at University of La Sabana. As of 2017 he is Teletón Colombia’s ambassador in Colombia, alongside Mábel Lara, Felipe Arias and Andrea Serna.
