Selina Sharma is one of the most popular and richest Musicologist who was born on January 6, 1970 in Italy. The year 1994 was the time Selina was the first person to India to study fieldwork related to the music of temples in the Vraja region for her M.Phil. research at Cambridge University of Cambridge. There, she began her education as a dhrupad vocalist under Pandit Vidur Mallik at Vrindaban. Recognizing the decline of the various forms of traditional arts and music in the Vraja region She returned to Vrindaban after completing their studies in Cambridge University in the summer of 1994. She then on, she dedicated her time to research as well as documentation of cultural practices of Vraja as well as other regions in India. As a result of this research, her goal of creating an academic institution to facilitate research, documentation, and diffusion of Vraja art took root and was realized the year 2004. Vraja Kala Sanskriti Sansthana was created by a group made up of committed scholars and artists comprising Selina Sharma as well as her spouse Shashank Goswami.

In 2006 Selina Sharma has focused her efforts on the promotion of the unique and endangered styles of folk art and traditional art from Vraja. Together with her husband the Sanjhi-born artist Shashank Goswami, she runs regular seminars and workshops about Indian arts and music. Indian stage plays based on epic themes, performed by children in schools as well as exhibitions of miniature artworks by talented young people who hail from Vraja in India as well as abroad. She also sings as a dhrupad performer in India as well as abroad.

Selina Sharma was born as Selina Thielemann in the family of scholars and musicians, Selina Sharma was introduced to Indian philosophy and culture as a young girl in particular through her father, a violinist Peter Thielemann and her mother Serena Mitzscherling, a renowned concert pianist. Selina received violin lessons by her father. After she completed her schooling and musical studies in Germany She then pursued an M.Mus. in ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and also studied medieval Hindi literary studies, Sanskrit and South Asian politics. She earned her M.Phil. in musicology at The University of Cambridge, and received her Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University. Her doctoral dissertation entitled “Musical traditions of Vaishnava temples in Vraja” was directed by the renowned musician Prof. Prem Lata Sharma. Sharma was the primary influencer on Selina’s ideas. Another person who was able to influence Selina’s views on academics is her mentor, the German academic Professor Josef Kuckertz, whose writings she collected after his passing and published under the title Essays in Indian music in 1999.
