Tanser was signed to a 1-year deal to join Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone in June of 2017. The following month, Tanser said that “This is the best club I have been at and I have loved it this season… everyone is together here, there are no outcasts in our squad”. He was part of 31 appearances with Tommy Wright’s “Saints” during the 2017-18 season when St Johnstone posted an eighth-placed finishing. In the summer, he revealed to The Courier that he was building up for greater physical strength and endurance, saying it had been “on a special diet, total protein and six meals a day. So I’m going to be throwing chicken, beef and all sorts of stuff down my neck soon. It’s just as well I’m not a vegetarian!”

On 29 December 2018, Tanser scored his first goal for St Johnstone in their 2–0 win over Tayside rivals, Dundee. He signed a new two-year contract extension at the club the following month. He ended the 2018–19 season with 45 appearances to his name, as well as three goals as he scored a penalty in the penultimate game against Motherwell.

Tanser was a part of the youth squads at Blackpool and Burnley before moving on to his way through the Rochdale Academy. He made his debut as a professional with Rochdale on the “Dale” after coming on in the 70th minute to replace D’Arcy O’Connor during an 1-0 win against Plymouth Argyle at Spotland Stadium on the 27th of April, 2013. It was his only appearance in the 2012-13 season , and the team did not play during the 2013-14 campaign, in which Rochdale was promoted from League Two. Tanser was a part of the first team shortly after the beginning of the 2014-15 season and was signed to the extension for two years in October 2014. The following month the manager Keith Hill said that Tanser had the potential to win England youth caps, but that “politics in football, the bureaucracy and the propaganda” kept lesser league footballers from getting the chance to be called up. Tanser made his debut senior goal on the 17th of January, 2015, scoring by scoring the help of a “well-controlled, left-foot volley” when Rochdale won a home 4-1 victory against Crawley Town. He was selected for the Football League team of the week. The season ended with a record of 30 League One appearances to his name.

He made his debut as a senior with Rochdale in April 2013 and played a total of 57 appearances in league and cup competitions with the team before being permitted to depart for Port Vale in January 2017. It was then that he signed with Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone just five months after.

Tanser signed a contract with League One rivals Port Vale on 27 January 2017 to run until the end of the 2016–17 season. Tanser said that the move “was a bit of a shock actually… one minute I am at Rochdale then the next minute I am signing for Port Vale. It is a bit mad really but that is the way that football is.” He was released by manager Michael Brown following the club’s relegation in May 2017.
