Scott Alan Sandelin (born August 8 1964) is an American former professional hockey player. Sandelin is the current head of Minnesota’s Duluth Bulldogs’ men’s hockey team. The year 2011 was the time he was the only coach of Bulldog tradition to guide the team to the title of a national champion. This was an overtime 3-2 win in the match against University of Michigan at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota. In the year 2018, he guided his Bulldogs to a second national championship, beating Notre Dame 2-1, also playing in the Xcel Energy Center. He was raised at Hibbing, Minnesota where he was selected at the end of the round of Montreal’s Montreal Canadiens (40th overall) and then play in the collegiate league with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
He helped lead in the year 2017 Bulldogs to the NCHC conference championship tournament, the final game of the season was a 3-2 defeat to Conference foe Denver as NCAA runners-up. In 2018, he steered his Bulldogs to a second National Title beating Notre Dame by a score of 2-1. The Bulldogs were able to qualify for an appearance at the NCAA Hockey Tournament by 0.0001 percent over the state rival Minnesota for the final at-large bid to the tournament. Scott’s second National title as head coach of the team in 2018 came a surprise by most in the hockey community following the loss the title game to Denver in the championship game. They lost many important players to retirement and early leaving for the NHL. Each time that the NCAA Frozen Four has been played in the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul the Minnesota team has prevailed by overtime. University of Minnesota in (2001-02) beating the University of Maine 4-3 and the Bulldogs in (2010-11) against the University of Michigan 3-2, and in 2017-2018 they beat Notre Dame 2-1.
Sandelin led the 2019-20 Bulldogs to 2nd place in the NCHC regular season, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference and NCAA tournaments were cancelled. His team goes into the next season still the reigning NCAA hockey champions.
The 30th of March, 2000 Sandelin was appointed the head coach at the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota-Duluth for long-time Bulldog head coach Mike Sertich. As the head coach, he’s been able to lead his Bulldogs to six seasons with 22+ wins as well as with eight NCAA tournament appearances (2003-04 2009-2010, 2008-09, 2010, 2012-2013 and 2015-2019). The team also had two Hobey Baker winners, Junior Lessard in 2004 and Jack Connolly in 2012, and 15 potential NHL hockey players as well as seventeen All WCHA selections. He played the role of US National Junior coach in 2005, and also an assistant director in the year 2012. Sandelin’s NHL career spans seven seasons playing for his team the Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) as well as the team he played for in his home state that was the Minnesota North Stars (1991-92).
